, Testosterone For Women?

Most of our patients know the importance our practice places on optimizing the hormone balance for both men and women. But what many people are unaware of is the importance of achieving optimal testosterone levels in women. Granted, women don’t need nearly as much of this vital hormone, but the issue needs to be addressed in peri-menopausal (the beginning stages) and absolutely needs to be addressed in menopausal women.

A recent article from November 25, 2013 in the journal Menopause evaluated the effects of different testosterone doses on sexual function, muscle performance, and lean body mass in women after a hysterectomy. What the scientists found was significant improvements in:

  • Sexual function
  • Sexual desire
  • Sexual arousal
  • Sexual frequency
  • Increased lean body mass
  • Increased muscle power

Maybe you are thinking, “That sounds great, but I really don’t want to look like a man.” The good news is that in this study there were hardly any adverse side effects. We carefully monitor each of our patients and work to achieve the perfect dosing combination of hormone to maximize benefits and prevent any unwanted side effects.

It’s almost impossible to maintain what you don’t monitor and your body is an excellent example of this important medical principle. Our hormone conversations and evaluations are based on your symptoms and your individual lab tests. Your prescription is customized to the desired hormone levels that optimize your health and vitality. There are currently no methods of dosing women with testosterone besides compounded bio-identical hormones. Although the FDA has not approved testosterone for use in women, the scientific evidence is very strong for significant health benefits for women when used in a carefully monitored manner. Women have testosterone naturally and maintenance of these natural levels helps our patients maintain their health and vitality.
